Growing up in Los Angeles, California, painting and drawing has been a major theme in Kathy Dana’s life for as long as she can remember. She was fortunate to come from a family that thrived on creativity. Private lessons in oil painting throughout her teenage years cemented her calling to a lifetime in art and lead to a degree and first career in art direction.
Working as an art director for one of the largest advertising agencies in the world, she came to appreciate composition, the interplay of color and the progression of moods cast by the light of day. Time spent on location with filmmakers and photographers awaiting the exact right moment to begin filming deepened her ability to observe why exactly a particular scene “worked”. Kathy returned to the joys and challenges of painting in 2013.
“My joy as an artist is to evoke a sense that all in view is truly alive.” Kathy is inspired by a mix of impressionist, realist, fauvist, color field and turn-of the century plein-air painters. She is also inspired by emerging artists in her Northern California community.
